Background: One of the most aggressive gastrointestinal cancers is pancreatic cancer. Therefore, this study assessed pancreatic cancer cases registered at Hiwa Hospital in Sulaymaniyah 2023.

Methods: The study is a cross-sectional descriptive study of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that are registered at Hiwa Hospital in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, during 2023. A total of 52 patients were registered during the study period. The data were analyzed using SPSS and presented descriptively.

Results: A total of 52 patients with pancreatic cancer were registered at Hiwa Hospital during 2023. The mean age of the patients was 63.63 ± 13.32 years, and the mean body mass index was 25.31 ± 3.13 kg/m². Male patients representing 29 patients (55.8%) showed a slight gender predominance. Smoking, diabetes, and hypertension were common. With regards to presenting symptoms, pain was the most common. Pain was the most common symptom, followed by weight loss and jaundice. Lastly, reported in 23 patients (60.5), the most common treatment modality was chemotherapy, followed by surgery in 13 patients (34.2%) and radiotherapy in 9 patients (23.7%).

Conclusion: Pancreatic cancer in Sulaymaniyah during 2023 was mainly observed among older adults, with a slight male predominance and a high frequency of smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. Majority of the patients complained of symptoms suggestive of an advanced disease such as pain, jaundice and weight loss. These findings highlight the need for improved cancer surveillance and earlier symptom recognition.
